What is the
Church of the Brethren?
It's a 300 year old community of congregations which desires to follow Jesus, living in his teachings and living in his Spirit.
So . . .
Brethren believe firmly that love brings life.
Brethren know that no one is even close to perfect, but Brethren are happy living peacefully, simply, together.
Brethren hold no creeds.
Brethren simply trust God, so, we don't need a show and what you see is what you get.
The history of the Church of the Brethren is remarkable for how God uses them for the progress of the whole human community.
The Brethren helped slaves escape before the Civil War.
The Brethren helped develop the structures of conscientious objection after WWI.
Our Brethren Volunteer Service was used as a model for the Peace Corps and continues serving in America and around the world.
The Brethren work with other churches and faiths, recognizing that somehow God works in all.
The Brethren are known for washing feet as an act of service and eating potluck meals as a joy in community.
The Brethren work across America and across the globe to serve in the name of Jesus and to share his message of love and peace.
The Brethren treat every person with equal respect.
We work "with" people and "along-side" people and in "mutuality."
Peacemaking is in our hearts.
Who we are . . .
Our church is not a building, it is just us. We rent the Whittier Neighborhood Association Community Center at 2900 Downing; they are very reasonable and we like cooperating with a neighborhood association.
We meet on Sunday evenings at 5:00 pm for conversation, prayer, singing and Bible study.
Otherwise, if we meet, we meet in small groups. Small groups are made up of folks who together make a covenant to perform a particular ministry.
We understand that God makes every member a minister and that every minister is a leader; so, the leadership of our church is shared. Jeff is a paid, part-time minister, funded in part by the Church of the Brethren in Kansas.
We enjoy hearing the different forms of music from everyone.
We are a church of adults at this time and have no services for children.
People wear comfortable clothing.
If you have a need . . .
When people are ill, or when they find themselves in the hospital, when they go to court or find themselves in prison, when people are hungry, or lonely, or they hunger spiritually, they have a need. We try to meet as many needs as best as we are able.
When people are strong and have vision, when they are full of resources and opportunities, when life is just going their way, they need to give and share. We try to cooperate with Christ=s Spirit to channel God=s power for the good in us all as best as we are able.
We offer: worship and prayer; opportunities for Christian education; anointing for the sick; baptisms to join with Christ and the church;
